Prismatic Gems will count as any color and as all colors for the Meta, but only as one of each. This means that an Orange Gem, for example, will count not only as a Red or a Yellow Gem for the Meta, but will also count as both a Red and a Yellow Gem for the Meta. These conditions are usually reliant on the other socketed Gems on your gear, and are governed by the same system as sockets. Unlike colored gems, Meta Gems require certain conditions in order to be activated. For purposes of activating a socket bonus, Gems fit Sockets as follows: Prismatic Gems count as any color, and only one can be equipped at a time. There are eight types of Gem: Red, Blue, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Green, Meta, and Prismatic. Likewise, Meta gems are the only type of gem that will fit a Meta socket. Red, Blue, and Yellow sockets can accommodate any type of gem except for Meta gems which only fit in Meta sockets. There are four types of Sockets, Red, Blue, Yellow, and Meta. If the color of the gem and the color of the socket do not match, the gem will work but will not count towards activating the socket bonus. The socket bonus is activated by filling all of the gem sockets with the correct types of gem. In Wrath of the Lich King Classic, gear may have one or more gem sockets and a socket bonus that grants additional stats.
